After graduating from the University of Leicester with a MSc in Geographical Information Science, Tom joined a university spin off organisation, beginning his geospatial career as a GIS and Earth Observation consultant. While in this role, he worked on some forefront projects including an ambitious project, to map an invasive plant species across Cuba for exploitation as a Biomass resources, aiding the reduction of Cuba’s dependency on fossil fuels. Tom joined 1Spatial in 2014, entering the consulting team, where he developed a keen understanding and passion for data and its governance. He led on large scale data projects such as the European Location Framework (ELF) project contributing to the delivery of a pan-European cloud platform for data validation and enhancement web services. Tom was later promoted into the Geocortex team and led on several large-scale enterprise GIS deployments into some of 1Spatial’s largest UK Utility customers. During this time Tom developed a deep understanding of how utilities function and the role data plays within these organisations. In 2019 he moved into the Utilities team to head up the Technical half of the vertical, quickly becoming a geospatial adviser to 1Spatial’s utility clients. Tom believes that a keen understanding of data and the ability to forge strong relationship with clients, working alongside them where necessary, to truly understand the customer objectives and deliver demonstrations of “art of the possible” solutions, is critical to a customer’s “data success strategy”. Tom’s strap line is, “Good data governance and effective use of data, maximising the value obtained from it, is the key to a sustainable future utility."
